PETRIFIED FOREST “FLORENTINO AMEGHINO” AND ITS PLACE IN THE HISTORY OF LIFE SEEN FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF THE CHUBUT RIVER

The Petrified Forest F. Ameghin ore presents a site of trees that were transported by rivers and their remains were deposited in an ancient sea beach, all of them are fossilized today. The age ofthis siteis around60 million years old during the Palaeocene and thebeginning of the Ageof Mammals.A few millionyearsago, due to a global cataclysm, severalgroups of animals andplants became extinct on Earth, including the largest dinosaursthat lived inthe Province ofChubut.

The history of life on Earth is still a great unknown, we only know a very small part of it; however, exploring the territory on both sides of the Chubut River, from the town “Los Altares” to the present coast, we can interpret part of our own remote history through observations of the rocks.

We begin our story in the vicinity of the town “Los Altares”, in the private ranch “La Flecha”, the place where the biggest dinosaurs that lived on Earth 90 million years ago were recently found. We continue mentioning the Petrified Forest F. Ameghino, site of geological interest near the town “Villa F. Ameghino”, where we find traces of a large marine ingression, with ancient beaches and remains of marine invertebrates and great fossilized trees which are 60 million years old. We can finish our story of the History of Life seen from the point of view of the Chubut River citing the Paleontological Park Bryn Gwyn, in Gaiman. There we can see fossilized organisms that lived on land and at sea and today they tell us a story that goes back 40 million years ago to the present.
