Visitors may enter the site only if they are accompanied by an authorized guide.
The management of the tourists is carried out with the support of Tourist Guides who are specialized in the scientific contents of the BPFA – Rural Custodian “Petrified Forest Florentino Ameghino” – Law. XXIII No. 26, 2010 Decree No. 1849/09.
The private ranch Sierras del Sur and the Provincial Government agreed to carry out a management plan for tourism, thereby preserving, protecting the area and enhancing the tourism value of the petrified forest, under the legal concept of Rural Custodian of the Petrified Forest Florentino Ameghino.
Located in the Lower Valley of the Chubut River, 55mi from the city of Trelew and covering an area of 223 hectares, the Petrified Forest FA is considered a non-renewable natural resource and part of the cultural-paleontological heritage. Therefore, in order to contribute to the care and conservation of the site, Tourist Guides, who are authorized by the Provincial Legislation, are regularly trained to operate in the Petrified Forest.
The last training was conducted in May 2011, by Dr. Robert Lech, Assistant Researcher of the National Council of Scientific and Technical Research of Argentina (CONICET-CENPAT), and by Prof. Jorge Reinoso, responsible for the Natural Protected Area: Petrified Forest “Florentino Ameghino”.
The aim of the specialization is to update and deepen the Geological and Paleontological knowledge of the guides for their performance in the Petrified Forest FA.
The content ranges from geological and paleontological subjects of the area, general aspects of the physical and natural environment, geological time and fossilization processes, as well as the different aspects of the Management Plan for the Petrified Forest “Florentino Ameghino”.
Moreover, other aspects that are taken into account are the characteristics of the circuit and the development of the tours to the site with the different groups of visitors.
